Dangerous Liaisons: Sofía Casanova and the Threads of Polish-Spanish Literary Affinity (La madeja by Sofía Casanova)
In 1886, a young Polish philosopher, Wincenty Lutosławski, arrives in Madrid to study pessimism in Spanish poetry. He is directed to a young poet who might provide him with material for his research. Upon receiving a volume of her poetry after their first meeting, Lutosławski writes beneath Casanova's dedication: "this woman will be my wife."
Thus begins the story of a relationship between two intellectuals from opposite corners of Europe — a future professor of philosophy and a Spanish Nobel Prize nominee. During the seminar, we will take a closer look at her sole surviving play, La madeja — an exception in her body of work, yet likely the only Spanish play written in Poland.
